Bangor Beautiful’s School Murals program brings together art, nature, and community to create meaningful, lasting experiences for students. Through collaboration with local artists, educators, and school communities, we transform school spaces into vibrant murals that reflect the natural world and our shared place within it.
At the heart of each project is the creative process, inviting students to contribute ideas, imagery, and energy while learning about the interconnectedness of people, plants, animals, and ecosystems. By weaving themes of native habitats and pollinators into each design, these murals help students see that they are not separate from nature, but a part of it.
The result is more than a mural, it is a sense of pride, belonging, and stewardship that extends beyond the classroom and into the broader community. Through themes rooted in ecology, pollinators, and native landscapes, each mural also serves as an invitation to learn about and care for the environment.
Working with Maine artist Peter Walls, and the students, teachers, and administrators of the Bangor School Department, we have installed murals at Abraham Lincoln School in 2024 and Downeast School in 2025. In 2026, we are going to Fruit Street School.

Bangor Beautiful president, Annette Dodd, and local artist, Peter Walls explain the project in this video shown to students along with lessons explaining the importance of pollinators.
Students then create images that Peter Walls assembles into a design (2024 & 2025 shown below) that is outlined for students to paint when they return to school in the fall. Students from Bangor High School help out on the last day, working with K-3 students to finish painting the mural.
