Bangor Beautiful in collaboration with the Bangor Farmers’ Market, is transforming a donated 20 foot shipping container into a vibrant community mural. The container provides essential on site storage for shared market equipment, helping the market operate more efficiently and serve more vendors and visitors.
While highly functional, the container presents a visual challenge in an otherwise welcoming public space. This project will convert it into a colorful, market themed mural that reflects the energy of the market and celebrates local food, farmers, and community.
As Everett Ottinger of the Bangor Farmers’ Market shared, “The container has been a huge benefit for the market, and this project is a chance to turn something purely functional into something that adds beauty, draws people in, and reflects what the market is all about.”
The mural will help beautify the space, create a recognizable landmark, and highlight the market as a central place in Abbot Square for local food and community connection.

Mural Painting
Sunday, May 24, 11:00am - 1:30pm
The mural will be created through a collaborative, community driven process led by Bangor Beautiful. Early in the outdoor market season, volunteers, vendors, and visitors will be invited to help prime the container and contribute drawings and collage elements inspired by fruits, vegetables, and foods found at the market.
These contributions will be used to develop a final mural design by artists from Bangor Beautiful. Once completed, the design will be outlined on the container, and the community will again be invited to participate by painting in the design during two additional market weekends, with the mural being completed by the end of May.
Bangor Beautiful will guide the artistic process and provide materials, while donating their time to coordinate and execute the project. The result will be a mural that is not only visually engaging, but also created by the people who make the market what it is.
We are actively fundraising for this incredibly large project, so please consider donating or becomine a project sponsor.
